Troubleshooting Steps

01

Disable startup programs

This is the single most effective change for most computers. Every app set to start with Windows adds to your boot time.

  • Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)
  • Click the Startup tab
  • Review the list, anything you don't need running immediately when you log in can be disabled
  • Right-click unwanted items and select Disable
02

Enable Fast Startup

Fast Startup puts Windows in a hybrid sleep state when you shut down, meaning the next boot is quicker.

  • Go to Control Panel → Power Options
  • Click Choose what the power buttons do
  • Tick the box for Turn on fast startup
  • Click Save changes
03

Check your drive type

The type of storage in your computer is the biggest hardware factor in startup speed.

  • Press Windows + E to open File Explorer
  • Right-click your C: drive and select Properties
  • If your PC has a traditional HDD, startup will always be slow by comparison
  • Upgrading to an SSD typically cuts startup time from minutes to seconds
04

Reduce login delays

Background apps that launch immediately after login can make startup feel sluggish even if the boot itself is fast.

  • Go to Settings → Apps → Startup
  • Turn off apps you don't need available immediately
  • This reduces the time between login and the desktop becoming fully usable
05

Scan for malware

Malware running at startup can dramatically slow boot times, and is easily overlooked as a cause.

  • If you have antivirus software installed, run a full scan now
  • If not, go to Settings → Update & Security → Windows Security
  • Click Virus & Threat Protection → Scan options → Full scan

If your computer is still taking a long time to start even after these changes, it's often due to older hardware or deeper system issues. In many cases, a proper assessment or an upgrade to an SSD makes a significant difference.
